Of all the scenarios we looked at, this one is the planet killer.
Every few million years of so the Earth finds itself in the middle of an interstellar shooting gallery. Just 65 million (I say it like it just happened a year or so ago) a rock the size of Manhattan impacted the Earth just outside what is now the Yucatan Peninsula. That speck of rock brought the worlds most fearsome alpha predators to their knees. This event is what made the rise of the mammals possible. In the event that WHEN this happens again, and it will, there will be little in the way of survival. A rock just 5 times bigger than that would bring life as we know it to a screeching halt.
We have to hit this thing before it gets here. Or we are all dead.
